Which Mac mini Should You Buy to Run AI Agents?
For cloud coding agents, choose memory and storage for your editor, builds and tests rather than a model name. For local inference, start with the selected model runtime’s requirements. For a persistent server, budget for recovery, backups and networking. Our configuration directions are editorial inference, not a benchmark or measured tokens-per-second promise.
What does Apple currently offer?
Checked: 2026-10-19. These are US technical-specification options, not claims about reseller inventory. Apple’s page currently lists M6 and M5 Pro; an older M4 listing is a different product generation.
| Chip | Unified memory | SSD options | Ethernet |
|---|---|---|---|
| M6 | 16GB; configurable to 24GB or 32GB | 256GB or 512GB configurations; up to 2TB | 2.5Gb; configurable to 10Gb |
| M5 Pro | 24GB; configurable to 48GB or 64GB | 512GB; up to 8TB | 2.5Gb; configurable to 10Gb |

Which configuration fits a cloud coding client?
The hosted model does not run its inference on your Mac. Your local workload still includes the editor, repository, dependencies, browser and test runner. Inventory those processes first. A small website and a browser-heavy integration suite can have very different requirements even when they use the same coding agent.
【Inference】For this use, prioritize enough memory for the existing development workflow and headroom for concurrent tools. A faster chip does not remove a remote account usage limit. Test a representative build before paying for an upgrade, and keep model subscriptions separate from the hardware budget.
What changes when you run a local model?
Memory must accommodate the runtime, selected model representation, context and other applications. A model’s download size alone is not a complete working-memory estimate. Quantization, context settings and runtime support can change the requirement. Follow the selected runtime and model documentation rather than assuming every model with the same parameter count fits the same machine.
Apple calls the listed capacity unified memory. External SSD storage is useful for files but does not increase that capacity. We have not measured local model speed on these machines, so we do not assign a model-size ceiling or promise interactive throughput. Record the exact model, runtime version and settings when comparing your own trials.
How should you plan an always-on machine?
An unattended machine needs a way to recover after a reboot, a failed update and a lost connection. Confirm remote access while someone can still reach the machine physically. Review user permissions, disk encryption behavior, backup restoration and how to stop a failed job. Do not treat a terminal multiplexer as a complete recovery system.
Keep the server on a stable surface with the manufacturer’s required operating conditions. A UPS is a category to evaluate for the whole equipment load, not a guarantee of a particular runtime. Network hardware and cables must match the intended connection; a configurable faster Ethernet port does not upgrade your router or internet service.
Should you buy a Mac or rent one?
Compare the expected work period, Apple-only dependencies, administration time and recovery requirements. Rental can fit a temporary build task; ownership can fit a sustained workload when you can operate the machine. Neither direction is automatically cheaper. Include minimum rental periods, storage, connectivity, electricity and backups in a like-for-like comparison.
The cloud Mac hosting guide at TopVPSList compares documented rental structures. This hardware page focuses on what you would own. For desk connectivity, use our MacBook hub compatibility guide, and for a complete workspace, read small home office devices.
What should you verify before checkout?
Save the exact chip, memory, storage and network configuration, then check seller identity, returns, warranty region and included accessories. A search result mixing generations is not a configuration comparison. Confirm your critical software supports the selected hardware and operating system before buying.

FAQ
Does a cloud coding agent need a local GPU?
A client calling a hosted model does not perform that model’s inference locally. Choose memory for the tools and builds you actually run.
Can an external SSD add unified memory?
No. It adds storage, not the unified memory used by applications and supported local model runtimes.
Is an HDMI emulator always required?
No. Evaluate it only if your specific remote display workflow needs one, and test recovery before relying on a headless machine.
